Woodwork
Entryway Bench
Low, solid, and quietly handsome. This bench is built to be used — shoes kicked under it, bags thrown over it, someone sitting on it to pull on their boots. It is not precious. It will only get better.
How to build it
-
Cut and square everything
Cut your bench top boards and legs to final length. Check all four legs are exactly the same height — even a millimetre of difference will make the bench rock. A disc sander or shooting board helps get clean, square ends.
-
Mark and drill
Mark the bolt hole positions on both the legs and bench top. Drill cleanly through with an 8mm bit. Go slowly on exit to avoid blowout on the face side. Clear out any splinters and check the bolt fits without forcing.
-
Dry fit first
Assemble the whole bench without glue. Check it sits flat on all four legs, that nothing twists, and that you are happy with how it looks. It is much easier to adjust now than once the glue is in.
-
Glue and bolt
Apply wood glue to all leg-to-top contact surfaces, then bolt through and tighten firmly with a washer on each side. Wipe any squeeze-out immediately with a damp cloth. Clamp across the joints if you have clamps, and leave flat for 24 hours.
-
Sand and finish
Sand in stages: 80 grit to remove any marks, 120 to smooth, 180 for a final surface. Work with the grain. Apply two coats of Danish oil or hard wax oil, letting each coat dry fully. The grain will deepen and the bench will feel like something.
