Woodwork
Low Long Shelf
A low, wide bookcase designed to run the length of a wall. The staggered vertical dividers look considered but the build is forgiving — all butt joints and primed pine. I built the 8-foot version for my living room. The same assembly scales to any length.
Before you build: styling inspiration
Styling references — low bookcases work best as a mix of books, objects, and open space
Mix upright books with horizontal stacks to vary the height and rhythm across compartments
Leave some bays partially empty — the negative space is part of the look
Use the top surface as a display shelf: lean art, stack books, add one or two larger objects
Warm objects (toolboxes, vintage tins, ceramic vessels) break up the flatness of books
The unit reads best against a light wall — painted white, it almost disappears and lets the contents do the work
The build
8 ft — alternate view
Mid-build — verticals going in
8 ft — step two assembling the middle shelves
How it goes together
- Build the base frame from 1×4 — this is the plinth the whole unit sits on.
- Attach the bottom-row verticals to the bottom panel first while it’s face-up on the floor — conceals the fasteners once assembled. Repeat for the middle shelf and its row of verticals.
- Set the bottom panel assembly onto the base and nail down.
- Install the side panels at each end — getting these plumb is the most critical step.
- Stack the shelf sections, nailing each shelf down into the vertical tops below it. Repeat for each section working upward.
- Cap with the top panel to lock everything together.
- Fill, sand, prime, paint. Two thin coats of flat white.
